Created in 2004, and based in Northern California, Gaines-Jones Scholars awards college scholarships to Black students in southwest Georgia and the San Francisco Bay Area. In this new video, co-founders Rob and Anita Jones Roehrick share stories of the organization's origins and mission. They are joined by their daughter and Advisory Board member, Miranda, and Gaines-Jones Scholars in Georgia: Akerian, Dervin, James, Javon; and in California: Mayana and Yoel.
On March 13, 2020 Gaines-Jones Founders, Friends, Board Members, Parents and Scholars gathered for a Spring Huddle in Albany, Georgia. Watch this video to learn about the history of the organization, how members of our Gaines-Jones family feel about education and how their scholarships have impacted the lives of our Scholars.
This is a note of gratitude to his donors from our fledgling poet, Camron McDonald, rising junior at Marin School of the Arts in Novato, California. As he finishes up his sophomore year via distance learning during shelter-in-place, for entertainment, Camron is into gaming and making his own music beats. His comfort food is ramen and he continues to turn to the art of writing for self-expression.
Southwest Georgia is one of two demographics for Gaines-Jones Scholars—the San Francisco Bay Area being the other. Besides being the birthplace of Gaines-Jones co-founder & Executive Director, Anita Jones Roehrick, Albany, GA has recently been in national news as an epicenter for COVID-19. Another Albany native, journalist and documentary filmmaker, Clennon King of AugustineMonica Films, produced this short video to shed light on the very dire situation in southwest Georgia.

April 23rd is World Book Day, first celebrated 1995. Also known as World Book and Copyright Day or International Day of the Book, this is an annual event organized by UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization). April 23 was chosen because it was the birth or death date for many famous writers globally, including William Shakespeare and Maurice Druon. |
